Main Field of Research, Short Bio & Research Output Statistics:
- Main Fields
of Research: Labour Economics & Industrial
Relations.
- I am
Professor of Economics at the Université libre de Bruxelles
(ULB); Director of the Centre Emile Bernheim de Recherche
Interdisciplinaire en Gestion (CEBRIG); Research Fellow of the
Department of Applied Economics of ULB (DULBEA), the Global
Labor Organization (GLO), and the Institute for the Study of
Labor (IZA), and a Research Associate of the Institute
for Interdisciplinary Research on Societal and Territorial
Issues (Soci&ter)
at the Université de Mons (UMONS) and of the Institute of
Economic and Social Research (IRES) at the Université Catholique
de Louvain (UCLouvain). I obtained my
Ph.D. in Economics in 2001 from the ULB. Since 2022, I am also Visiting Professor at UCLouvain and
part-time Associate Professor at UMONS.
- My
research is in the area of labour economics & industrial
relations, in particular the analysis of matched
employer-employee panel data to uncover the determinants of
productivity, earnings (wage costs) and cost-competitiveness. I
do also research on labour market institutions (e.g., trade
unions, minimum wages, labour market protection legislation);
educational and skills mismatches; migration; discrimination;
workforce diversity, HRM practices and firm performance; ageing
and employability; global value chains and offshoring; sickness
absenteeism; firm credit constraints and employment; and
household over-indebtedness. I advised various
organizations including the Central Economic Council, the
European Central Bank, Eurofound,
the European Commission, the European Trade Union Institute, the King
Baudouin Foundation, the Fondation Bernheim, IWEPS, the National
Bank of Belgium, and the OECD.
- I
co-edited several books (Palgrave) and special issues of
scientific journals, and published in Applied Economics, Applied
Economics Quarterly, British Journal of Industrial Relations, De
Economist (Netherlands
Economic Review), Economic and Social Review,
Economics of Education Review, Economics of Transition and
Institutional Change, Education Economics, Empirica: Journal of
European Economics, European Journal of Industrial Relations,
ILR Review (Industrial and Labor Relations Review), Industrial
Relations: A Journal of Economy and Society, International
Journal of Manpower, IZA Journal of Development and Migration,
IZA Journal of Labor Economics, IZA Journal of Labor Policy,
Journal of Economic Inequality, Journal of Financial Stability,
Journal of Sports Economics, Kyklos, LABOUR: Review of Labour
Economics and Industrial Relations, Regional Studies, Oxford
Economic Papers, Review of the Economics of the Household,
Review of International Economics, Review of World Economics,
The Manchester School, The World Economy, Scottish Journal of
Political Economy, Socio-Economic Review and other journals. I
am a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the International
Journal of Manpower (since 2008) and have been a co-editor of
the Brussels Economic Review.
- Statistics
Relative To My Research Output (as of December 2024):
- SBS-EM
Ranking (ULB): 326 points,
14 top publications
[namely, 13 articles in top journals* and 1 chapter in a book
published by the University of Chicago Press (publisher associated
with 10 points in SBS-EM ranking)].
- Google
Scholar: 4,285 citations, h-index 38, i-10 index 69.
- Among
top 3% (rank 32 out of 1,046 authors) best ranked
economists in Belgium when considering all publication years.
- Among
top 3% (rank 23 out of 1,046 authors) best ranked
economists in Belgium when considering publications over
last 10 years.
- Among
top 3% best ranked economists in the European Union and in
Europe.
- Among
top 4% RePEc authors according to h-index.
- Number
of publications in SSCI-ranked journals: 64.
- Sum of
impact factors associated with my publications: 159.8.
- 56 IZA Discussion Papers, which have been
downloaded 212,303 times.
- IZA
ranking: among top 1% (rank 125 out of 13,108 IZA Research
Fellows and Affiliates, based
on IZA DPs downloads).

(*) AJG
(Academic Journal Guide)
of the Chartered Associated of Business Schools
(United Kingdom), CNRS
(Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France), and SBS-EM
(ULB, Belgium) rankings of journals, reported below, refer to the date of publication of each
article (or, in a few cases - in line with SBS-EM rules -
according to most recent rankings if better than at date of
publication). The AJG ranking goes from 1 to 4* (4* identifying
the best journals) and the CNRS ranking from 4 to 1e,g
(1e,g identifying the best journals). The SBS-EM
ranking goes from 1 to 10 points. It is obtained by summing the
AJG and CNRS rankings. A publication in the British Journal of
Industrial Relations, for instance, provides 7 points as it
is ranked 4 in the ABS (4 points out of a maximum of 5) and ranked
2 in the CNRS (3 points out of a maximum of 5). A 'top
publication', according to the SBS-EM criteria, is a publication
in a journal being ranked at least AJG 4 or CNRS 1.

(**) AJG
(Academic Journal Guide) of the
Chartered Associated of Business Schools (United Kingdom), CNRS
IF
provides the 2021 impact factors of SSCI-ranked journals.
